Intro: under-painting, composition, mixing paint and clean-up.

Bring:  pencil, eraser, paint, brushes, palette, a water container.

***No canvass necessary***

Class #2

Bring painting equipment and 3 “subjects” to discuss,

The best subject, is a photograph, taken by you, which has personal meaning.

Best choices are:     travel pictures, your neighbourhood, flowers, fruit, not abstract.

The photograph should be:    Clear, un-cluttered, good range of light & dark.

NOTE:    Portraits are too difficult for your first painting

If you have access to a B/W photocopier,
enlarge your pictures on two 11" x 17" = 22" x 17"
to the size of your canvas (20" x 16")

If you have trouble choosing from your photographs,
take a look at the web sites listed below.

Free Image Web Sites:

www.googleimages.com - best site, if you select "large size" from the options menu

www.flickr.com – public (mixed res. Great search engine)

www.webshots.com – public/commercial (good res. Great download)

** TIP:  Print equipment shopping list **

Equipment:

There are 3 major art stores in town.

Opus (closes 6pm) is the oldest, has great frames, large selection.
Deserres, recent competition from Toronto, has 2 locations and has excellent sales.
Kroma  makes their own paint on Granville Island and is highly recommended by advanced students.  Ask about their "Vancouver Grey".

NOTE:   Art stores can be overwhelming.
If you buy everything at once, you may waste your money.
Try visiting the store(s) regularly.  Ask about up-coming sales.
Buy equipment as you need it.

Paint:                        NOTE: Oil painters need odourless thinner & stand oil

Necessary:                Red, yellow, blue, black, white + Gloss Medium.

Optional:                   2 reds, 2 blues, 2 yellows, violet, orange, green, ocher & brown(s)

Useful:                      Naples Yellow, Hookers Green, Quinocridone Rose,
Impasto medium (thick), Gesso (primer), metalics, pearlescent.

Brushes:               Deserres has a good starter set called "Clear Choice",
but  they are a little small.

Do not get their set in canvas roll – because they suck!

Necessary:             “00” detail brush, #8 round, #8 (3/8") filbert

Note: each company has their own system – take your time.

Optional:                3/8” angled brush, blunt “scumbling” brush, fan brush, many more.

Canvas:               Avoid cheap canvases (with staples on the outside edge)
Please spend the money on an actual canvas – not canvas board.

16” x 20” is a good starting size,
